“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your *strength*.” (Mark 12:30, NIV).
When Jesus includes “strength” in this command, He reminds us that our bodies, energy, capabilities, and daily efforts are part of our worship. Loving God is not only something that happens in our thoughts or emotions; it shows up in what we do, how we work, how we serve, and how we steward the physical life He has given us.
Loving God with all your strength means offering your everyday energy to Him. It’s choosing to serve when it would be easier to stay comfortable, to show up for people when you feel tired, and to do your work – paid or unpaid – as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:23). It’s using your gifts, skills, and time to build others up and advance His kingdom, whether anyone notices or not. Even simple acts – caring for a child, helping a neighbor, volunteering at church, doing your job with integrity – become holy when they’re done in love for God.
But loving God with all your strength also means taking care of the strength you have. Our culture often glorifies burnout and busyness, but God calls us to wise stewardship, not self-destruction. Rest, healthy rhythms, good sleep, nourishing food, and movement are not selfish – they’re ways of honoring the body He entrusted to you so that you can keep loving and serving well. Sometimes the most faithful thing you can do is to slow down, set a boundary, or say no, so that your “yes” to God and others remains strong and sincere.
Finally, loving God with all your strength is about perseverance. Strength is not just about how much you can lift today, but how you keep going with God over the long haul. It’s trusting Him when you feel weak, asking Him to be your strength when yours runs out (2 Corinthians 12:9 – 10), and continuing to obey even when you don’t see quick results. As you offer your body, your effort, and your endurance to Him day by day, your whole life becomes a living expression of love – a tangible, physical “yes” to the God who gave you breath in the first place.
Prayer for STRENGTH: Lord, You know the limits and weaknesses of my body. Give me wisdom to care for it so I can endure in the work You’ve called me to. Help me neither to neglect my health nor to idolize it, but to see it as a gift to steward for long-term faithfulness. Amen!
